Don’t Look For Discounts When It Comes to Your Face…

December 20th, 2010 No Comments

Did you know that anyone with an M.D. after their name can purchase Botox, Fillers or a laser? And, take a weekend training course and open up shop? What about that new Medical Spa that opened and is offering Botox for only $8.00 a unit? Has their Medical Director ever been trained in the use of Botox or any of the laser treatments they offer? And, how much experience does the person administering the procedures actually have? Just because an injector wears a white coat doesn’t mean they have a medical license or the proper training. Do you really want to trust your face to just anyone because they have the best price?

The injectors here at New You Colorado have a combined total of over ten years of experience and have been teaching other medical professionals in the safe and effective use of Botox and dermal fillers for nearly six. As a practice, we have countless hours of training and experience and are frequently involved training others. We continually read and research the products we use as well as any products awaiting FDA approval. We make a conscious effort daily to do everything possible to be the best at what we do. But yet, people get lured in by the by the offer of a discount and the savings may be as little as a dollar a unit or $50.00 less on a syringe of filler, only to wind up in the chair of an experienced injector, and asking, “Can you fix it?”

The importance of choosing a well trained injectionist who understands how to balance the dimensions of your face as well as facial physiology will help ensure a favorable outcome. Come ready to ask questions and be prepared to get them answered. Be sure to share all of your medical information as well as any past procedural experiences, both favorable and unfavorable!

Aesthetic medicine has come a long way over the past 10 years. Many patients can put off a face lift for several years just by coupling Botox, Dysport, dermal fillers or volumizers with laser treatments. Finding someone who understands that all faces and skin types are not created equal will help you avoid collateral damage and hopefully achieve your facial rejuvenation goals.

Lumenis Active FX Used To Treat Burn Victims Scars

December 10th, 2010 No Comments

Devin Barnhart is nothing short of a hero. In August 2008, Devin traveled with two friends to console a another friend who had just lost his mother to cancer. The house that they all were staying in caught fire. Devin was able to get out of the house. However, he bravely attempted to go back into the burning house in a heroic effort to save his friends. Unfortunately, the friends were unable to be saved and Devin was severely burned over most of his body.

Devin spent a significant amount of time in the University of Colorado Burn Trauma/Intensive Care Unit and underwent multiple painful skin grafting operations.

Inspired by Devin’s story, Denver, Colorado Board Certified Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Manish Shah began treating Devin’s scars using the Active FX laser. The Active FX laser has been proven valuable to help in scar management. Dr. Shah has been treating Devin’s scars on his face, chest, back, and legs for almost fifteen months and has seen significant improvement in the appearance of his scars.

What is the Newest and Greatest Injectable Filler? It’s Something You Already Have!

November 2nd, 2010 No Comments

The world of facial rejuvenation and enhancement has drastically changed over the past few years. Beginning with the early days of collagen, we basically chased lines and wrinkles but we have come a long way since then. Today, we have several more options and more importantly, we also know how to use these new products and technique in a much more efficient manner.
One of the most recent additions to the world facial injectables is actually already in your back pocket…or, to be more specific, running in your veins. That’s correct. The latest injectable method is a biologic product that you already have!
This new injectable products aimed at volumization is prepared in a few simple steps. First, a little amount of blood is drawn out of your vein. Using a centrifuge, your blood is then spun causing the red and white blood cell components to be separated from the platelets and fibrin. In the final step, the platelets and fibrin are joined with a fibrin mixture which creates a platelet rich fibrin matrix (PRFM) that is then injected just below the skin. Although the media is referring to this brand new product as the “Vampire Filler,” we prefer to call it by its trade name, Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) .
The PRP treatment process generally takes anywhere from 10-20 minutes and is most commonly associated with minimal amount of pain, discomfort, and downtime. During the PRP treatment, some of the injected product will be lost. Therefore, most injectors are over-replacing volume by around 20% knowing that the final result in volume will be somewhat lower than what they originally injected into the patient.
Why would PRP  be any more effective then the other multiple filler products available? Selphyl contains a number of growth factors which not only encourage the growth of new collagen but also help re-mold the skin starting from the inside out. Very drastic improvements have been seen not only for all facets of facial aging, but also for patients with prominent acne scarring.
One of the best things about PRP is that an allergy test is not needed because your own tissue is being used. However, PRP is not for everyone. If you are on any type of aspirin therapy or using any other medications that tens to thin your blood, you may not be a good candidate. If you are attempting to get your health care insurance to cover your treatment, good luck…
As for the longevity of PRP, it is dependent on the amount of volume lost and the degree of facial aging. For most clients, we will discuss a series of PRP treatments that will gradually build up and replace the lost collagen and so you may expect anywhere from 2-4 treatment sessions over the course of one year. Many patients that were treated with Selphyl reported that they not only saw an increase in volume but also a dramatic enhancement and overall glow to their skin. In fact, we have seen results in our office that are similar to a facelift or laser resurfacing treatment.
And the good news is that Selphyl is not only effective for facial aging but we are also incorporating this revolutionary new treatment into our breast enhancement surgeries in order to rejuvenate the décolleté area. This is area is especially difficult to improve with only traditional methods. Selphyl holds tremendous potential for combining the results of a recent breast enhancement with facial rejuvenation in a extremely natural way.
For those of you with facial aging who have been looking for a more natural alternative to the fillers currently available, the answer is here. PRP is not only natural, it works!

Botox vs. Dysport: What’s the Difference?

October 18th, 2010 No Comments

The field of aesthetic medicine is ever changing and with two neuromodulators now on the market and two more to come in the next year, you may be wondering how do I know which product is better? Or more importantly, which product is for me?

Botox has been a household name for over 10 years and over 1 million people have been treated with it for moderate to severe glabellar or more commonly known as (frown lines) between the brows. While the FDA has only approved Botox cosmetic for this area, it has been safely used off label for treating crows, feet, forehead lines and many other areas.

In early 2009, a second neurotoxin Dysport was FDA in the U.S. and also approved for treatment of moderate to severe glabellar lines. This product has been used by experienced injectors in some of the top Plastic Surgery markets for many years.

So what is the difference? First let’s look at the similarities between Botox and Dysport.

– Both products are botulinum toxin type A
– They are both purified proteins
– They are both approved cosmetically for treatment of frown lines
– They are both used off label to treat crows’ feet, forehead lines and other areas.

The differences between the two products are:
- The proteins in Dysport are smaller.
- The cost per unit of Dysport is less than the cost per unit of Botox.
- However, the amount of units of Dysport required to achieve optimal results is greater.
- Botox is not recommended if you have an egg allergy.
- Dysport is not recommended if you have a cow’s milk allergy.
- Some studies have shown that Dysport may have a quicker on-set then Botox.
- Most studies have shown that there is only about a 1-2 day difference in the on-set time.
- Studies are mixed as to whether one product lasts longer than the other.

In this expert’s opinion I think these products like all others is patient dependant. If you are happy with the product you have been using then maybe “If it’s not broken don’t fix it,” should apply. However, if you are not getting the results or the longevity you want out of your current neromodulator, then switch. I can honestly say that for some of my clients who have switched from one to the other they have been happier while for others they didn’t see a big difference.

Red Cheeks Have You Feeling Blue?

October 12th, 2010 No Comments

Rosacea is a chronic skin condition that affects as many as 14 million Americans and tends to be more common in adult women. Rosacea is an inflammatory condition of the skin that affects the pores and it occurs when blood vessels that live close to the skin’s surface expand, swell and cause the skin to become red. Someone with this condition often looks as if they are blushing or flushed most of the time.

Although there is no cure for rosacea, there are ways of controlling it and limiting its effects, not only on your skin but your self esteem. The skin of many rosacea sufferers may be overly sensitive and easily irritated. As such, rosacea sufferers should avoid using products that burn, sting or irritate their skin. The sun can also cause unwanted inflammation so make you always wear sunscreen. In addition, alcohol and spicy foods can also aggravate the condition so limiting that in your diet is a good way to help keep it under control.

The symptoms of rosacea often vary from one person to another and treatments for rosacea are customized depending on your individual situation. I have treated patients who are troubled by redness and flushing, and other patients have bumps and pimples or thickening of the skin, while others are plagued with visible broken blood vessels. However, the one common denominator is that all of my patients have lowered self esteem before they start treatment. For patients with redness and pimples, I often prescribe oral antibiotics and topical therapy to help bring the condition under control. Hydrafacial treatments are also effective because they can treat even the most sensitive skin.

For people with visible broken vessels and extensive redness, laser treatments can be effective in proving relief. The laser emits wavelengths of light that target blood vessels that lay just below the skin and essentially seals them. While each patients severity of the illness is different, generally three laser treatments will greatly improve the appearance of your rosacea.

I encourage you to call me today for a complimentary skin care consultation. I can get you on the path to clearer, calmer, skin. 303.951.5829

Need a Break From Your Break Outs?

September 27th, 2010 No Comments

Acne can cause an embarrassing condition for anyone of any age. Although, acne is typically more prone in teenagers I often see patients in their forties who also suffer from severe acne issues. Whiteheads, blackheads, pimples, and cysts, are all considered to be acne and all of them are embarrassing.

Acne occurs when the opening to your oil glands (pores) become clogged. Normally, oil glands keep the skin lubricated and remove dead skin cells. But, if a gland produces too much oil, the pore becomes blocked and collects dirt and bacteria. If the clogged pore ruptures, oil and bacteria can spread to the surrounding area and cause an inflammatory reaction and produce a whitehead, blackhead, or pimple.

People with acne are desperate to try anything from products sold on television, at-home remedies, or simply something a friend suggested to improve their condition. The first time I meet with a patient that suffers from acne, they are extremely frustrated because they feel as though they have tried everything and they see little to no improvement. What my patients are most pleased about in their first consultation with me is that I can give them hope. I give them hope because I can offer them the latest breakthrough technology treatment designed specifically to treat their acne.

The Hydrafacial is the newest break-through in the treatment of acne. The HydraFacial has been featured on “The Doctors” show and “Oprah” and is the latest advancement in non-laser skin resurfacing. HydraFacial is the only treatment that combines cleansing, exfoliation, extraction, hydration and antioxidant protection simultaneously. These methods combine to reveal clearer, more beautiful skin with minimal discomfort or downtime.

There are several different clinically developed skin solutions, specialty treatments, and vials used in your HydraFacial treatment. To treat acne, I generally use the “GlySal Acid Peels”. This customized blend of glycolic and salicylic acid combine physical and chemical peeling to achieve dramatic results. Unlike a traditional peel, there is little to no downtime because the skin is kept well hydrated, smooth and radiant following your treatment.

Most patients see will see an immediate difference in their skin following treatment. Receiving four to six treatments every 10 days, will help you achieve the best results. After that, a simple maintenance plan of one treatment per month will optimize results and help keep your skin less prone to break outs.

Introducing Asclera: The Gold Standard for the Treatment of Spider Veins

September 9th, 2010 No Comments

If you have been hiding your legs all summer because of unsightly spider veins, then Sclerotherapy just might be your answer. The good news isthat there is an easy solution those clusters of red, blue or purple veins on your thighs, calves or ankles with little to no downtime.

In the past, many providers used a detergent based products, such as Sclerovin, but the results were only moderately successful. And for years, the standard treatment was to use hypertonic saline. But for most patients, the results were only relatively satisfactory. And patients were required to wear compression hose for up to two weeks post-treatment. And in late summer or early fall these “less than fashionable hose” can be hot and uncomfortable.

New You Colorado is pleased to introduce Asclera. This product has been the Gold Standard for treatment of Spider Veins in Europe for over ten years and was recently FDA approved in the U.S. a few months ago. The best news is that many patients don’t need to wear compression hose and, if they do, it is only for 3-5 days as opposed to several weeks.

The procedure is relatively painless, because we use a very small needle to inject the solution into non-working veins. And the entire process takes approximately 45 minutes to complete with results that can often be seen in as little as 3 weeks.

Call now to schedule your appointment and if you book between anytime in the month of September, we will include a second follow up treatment at no cost. 303.951.5829

Which Filler Is Best For Your Lips?

August 27th, 2010 1 Comment

Using Filler in your lips doesn’t always mean you want a little more “pout”.  Filler is used more often than not to correct vertical lip lines, to turn up the corners of the mouth, or because the natural aging process has left your lips looking “deflated”.

With so much information and so many different types of fillers available, it can difficult for the average consumer to know which filler is the safest and which filler is the best to use in the lips. During my initial consultation with my patients requesting Lip Augmentation, I address these questions and concerns.  The most common question I am asked is, “Does it hurt?”

While no filler has been FDA approved for the lip, Lip Augmentation accounted for nearly half of all the injectable filler use for many years.   Restylane has been available in the U.S. since 2002 while Juvederm and Perlane became available in 2006.  To answer the question,  “Will it hurt?” Restylane, Perlane and Juvederm are all available with lidocaine.  This makes for a far more comfortable treatment with very little discomfort.

Here are a few suggestions before having your lips augmented.  First, research the products.  Next, find a qualified injector.  This means, a licensed medical professional who does this every day, is up to date on the latest techniques and product information and who is conservative in the amount of product used. Using 1 syringe of the desired product is a great place to start, you can always add more if you would like.

I love injecting filler because I can help my patients turn the clock back 5 years, just by rejuvenating the mouth.  For my patients that have some lip and just want a little more I almost always reach for Juvederm Ultra Plus XC, it creates just enough volume and feels soft in the lips.  For my patients that have never done their lips and they are a little nervous I use Restylane-L or Juvederm Ultra XC, these two products give just a little volume and are great for correcting vertical lips lines or creating a border.  If you have what is often referred to as a “chicken lips” or no lips at all, Perlane-L will give you the lips you’ve longed for. Lip Augmentation takes less than one hour. There is some bruising and swelling at the injection site but this will generally subside within a few days.

Why Using Medical Grade Skin Care Products Is So Important

July 8th, 2010 No Comments

Your face is your calling card. This is the first place a person looks at when meeting you. Proper skin care can achieve healthy, strong and radiant skin.

A good skincare regimen is the least invasive way to change your skin. The problem starts in the dermis layer due to a break down of collagen and elastin, and a decrease of moisture.

This change can start in your early 30’s with a decrease in the production of collagen and cellular turn over goes from 28 days to 45 days. Loss of adhesion between the epidermis the upper layer, and the dermis the middle layer creates prematurely aged skin, fine lines and wrinkles.

Medical grade skin care products contain high amounts of active ingredients that will work to correct specific skin conditions.   Clinical research of ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, peptides, antioxidants, retinol, and growth factors just to name a few are proven to penetrate the epidermis or top layer to the dermis. Collagen and elastin and new skin cells are then stimulated and skin conditions are corrected.

Some over the counter products do not have the clinical research or level of active ingredients to penetrate the epidermis, so there is no correction of any skin problems.

Medical grade sunscreens such as SkinMedica, sold in our office,  provides maximum protection from the UVA and UVB rays with a combination of physical and chemical ingredients. There is also an added safety issue by the way the product is packaged and protected in silver tubing to avoid sun exposure.  Sunscreen does expire over a period of time so it is important to check your sunscreen to make sure it is clearly marked with an experation date. Medical grade products are found in a doctor’s office and it is important that you see a professional to advise you on products that can correct your skin condition and concerns.

Aging is a natural part of life, looking your age is not.
